[EM] 25 - Rain
“You’re going to catch your death, sweetheart!”
Flinching was the last thing to leave her, it seemed, as she jumped just a little at the shout from behind her. Turning her head to see Felicia Callahan standing behind her, the newly adopted sixteen year old Valkyrie Prescott Callahan smiled sheepishly from her place seated cross-legged on the porch, just under the overhang to watch the rain fall outside. It was horribly cold, no question…but for her, it was all part of the fun.
“Sorry, ma’...Mum.” She apologized, turning back to the storm. “Does Abe want me to get my jacket?”
A moment later, she felt the thick, heavy material of her jacket settle over her shoulders. “Beat you to the punch…I know how you like your storms, my little rain child.”
“Thanks…Mum.”
She felt Felicia sit beside her, then the warmth of her hand on her knee that was becoming more comfortable with every passing day. “Valkyrie, honey…you can call me ‘Ma’ like the boys do. It’s okay. They have their mothers, too…I don’t want to be a replacement for you.”
Ducking her head shyly, Valkyrie nodded. “Thanks…Ma. And…um…well…you can call me Kiki if you want.”
It had been a point of contention for them since she showed up, and she was oddly warmed when she saw Felicia smile at that. “Thank you, sweetie.”
Smiling, she bit her lower lip and turned back out to the storm, oddly comforted by the warmth of Felicia…her mom…at her side.
After a few minutes she stood, shed her jacket, and walked out into the rain…then ran, howling gleefully.
“Kiki! Good Lord!”
Valkyrie stood in the middle of the lawn and turned her face up into the downpour, opening her mouth to catch a flood of raindrops on her tongue. It was a harsh storm, but there wasn’t any thunder or lightning…just the glorious downpour of clean, cleansing water, stinging her skin in relentless, hard pellets. It hurt and healed at the same time, and if she wasn’t so terrified of how they looked, she would have stripped off her shirt and let the rain run over her scarred flesh.
Too many years she spent, aching to go into the rain again, like she had when she was seven and got beaten for tracking water into the house. It was her first storm to be free in…to baptize herself in the wild, pure, cleansing hurt of rain pounding her face and body relentlessly. Only here were the lashes a comfort…the kiss of rain instead of the kiss of leather and metal, a loving touch and a healing pain rather than the one that flayed her heart and flesh open at the same time.
And Ma was laughing. She was dry and laughing, and she was being baptized the same way, losing the name of Felicia and gaining the name of Mother. The rain didn’t touch her until she came to haul her back inside, to give her towels and giggle and help her find dry clothes.
Cain would yell at her…and Julius would just smile. They would have dinner, and he’d help her do the dishes. He’d never stop cursing her name the entire time.
And for the first time in her life…Valkyrie finally felt like she was home.
